I really love concept art–especially sci-fi related things due to my hours spent playing Destiny 2. I love ship designs.
If you haven’t seen any Destiny art, you’re missing out and I highly recommend you take some time to look at it. The art throughout the games–and the artbooks–is just incredible. It inspired me to try living again, and quite frankly saved me from a dark period in my life.
As with anything you start, it all starts with a simple sketch. Details aren’t too important yet; what we’re looking for is a general idea of what we’re trying to do.
(Left) I smoothed out the design to create a semi-detailed lineart.
(Right) I selected these colors as the base colors for the ship. I chose them because yellow and purple are supposedly complementary, but I never liked the way they look together. Ha!
As I progress as an artist, I am learning how to add textures well. These textures are fairly subtle, so I will define them a bit more before calling this one finished.
This is the final image from this project. I still don’t like yellow and purple, so I strongly feel it would have looked better if I had used other colors. I was pretty pleased with the lighting, even though the bottom light panel looks a little too light for being on the side/underneath area.
Here’s a 30-second time-lapse of the ship I made for this project.
