Blizzard Building

I recently started playing Overwatch. I’ve wanted to play for quite some time, but I never tried because I was pretty convinced I was terrible at FPS (first-person shooters). However, I’ve dumped hundreds of hours into Destiny 2 in the last year, so my skills have improved substantially.

I saw a rather beautiful building in one of Overwatch’s maps. Blizzard makes such beautiful games, and I was inspired to try drawing a similar building. Check it out!

I started with a basic sketch and then refined it into a nice lineart.

At the bottom, you’ll notice the color palette I chose! I follow a kind fellow on Instagram who posts amazing palettes. I’ve saved dozens for future projects–I always give him credit when I use them. So far, this is the only one I’ve used!

Blizzard’s games–or at least World of Warcraft–are an interesting art style. I’m not sure what it’s actually called, to be honest–I think it could be considered cell-shaded art.

This is a picture of flat colors. I’m a fan of textured backgrounds that don’t distract from the focal point of the illustration.

This is how the building looked after I was finished rendering it. I’m pretty proud of how it developed! I’m still working out how to best utilize textures in my work.  I was the most proud of the flowery vines (and the railing). I sent the most time on this part because I thought it was so beautiful.

Here’s a 30-second time-lapse of my process. Believe it or not, it started out as a portrait, and then I somehow decided to draw a building… shrug.  🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
